The Silver Deer Concert

12th July Sunday LONDON, Steiner Theatre, 35 Park Road, NW1 6XT. SILVER DEER EVENING IN LONDONConcert featuring Nigel Shaw and Carolyn Hillyer (Dartmoor) with Tatyana Lar (Siberia) plus guest musicians Michael Ormiston and Candida Valentino (Mongolian Khoomi). Film showings of Yaptik and Tundra from 6.30pm. Concerts start 7.30pm ~ tickets £15 ~ cafe and bar ~ Survival International campaign stall.

Tatyana Lar is singer from the Siberian Nenet tribe who lives on the Yamal Peninsula in the Russian Arctic. The Nenet people are traditionally nomadic reindeer herders, although their ancient way of life has been significantly eroded by industrialisation and the impact of political and environmental changes. Tatyana has been singing since the age of four – each evening on the tundra her family would encourage her to sing about everything they had experienced so that the day was lived again in song. She later studied music at the Cultural Education School in Salekhard, learning bayan and balalaika. In 2007 Tatyana represented the Nenet people at the Forum of Indigenous People at the United Nations in New York . She has performed throughout Russia and at some European Folk Festivals but this is her first visit in the UK . Tatyana will sing in her Nenet Language, a blend of traditional folk songs and original compositions from her album Seihead ngada syo [Songs from the Heart].

Nigel Shaw and Carolyn Hillyer live and work amid the wilds of the Dartmoor landscape. They have released over 30 music albums and make most of the flutes and drums with which they perform. Their work is inspired by the raw power, beauty and hidden spirit of the wild land, and their live concerts reflect this in a rich tapestry of ancient instruments and unusual songs. Using handmade wooden, clay and bone flutes; traditional whistles, small pipes and Slovakian fujara; stag, horse, reindeer and salmon drums, they move from delicate soul-filled flute melodies, through deep raw chants and strong earth songs, to powerful tribal dance rhythms. Nigel and Carolyn perform throughout the world and met Tatyana Lar in Russia in 2007.

The Adventures of Miss Smith

"You are never too old for adventure" declared Miss Smith

When I was in Glastonbury I stayed in a Bed & Breakfast of Diana Milstein who has done a series of paintgings ~'The Adventures of Miss Smith'. They are delightful, funny, moving and profound.
"I am an artist living & working in Somerset, England. "The Extraordinary Adventures of Miss Smith" is a series of paintings / prints (70 in all) about a little old lady whose life is transformed by her belief in the power of magic."

Goddess Litany

She folded into infinity
At the centre and the circumference of all
In the Silence the never ending embrace

In the eyes of new born babes she dances the Song of Elders
Black ashen feet She dances

Rattle bone brittle into dust
Stars of pain and joy

With dew from her tongues she forges your heart
Burn smoulder sharpened carved
You bright flame the first born
Black as the innocent

Dancing in the Sky

I am your desire

Light in your hand
Dancing in the sky

Dust of stars my throat burbling springs of joy
Oceans deep with teeth of mountains and
Sharp mirror to your eyes

Sound your longing
That birth you into being
In the cavern of my breast

I was born to desire you

Your kiss burning my heart
Your winged eyes fan the heavens
A thousand suns beating in your veins
Blood of heaven
Blood of earth
Blood of body
Blood of Light
Blood of Life
Blood of Death

Tender Care

Today I walked along the road I have walked many times.
A road where I pass many people who I choose not to notice or remember.
Today I passed a man. His face twisted red raw. His skin twisting turning inside out.
Invisible man. Skinning himself alive.
Tender
Eyes burning. Lost.
This is his life.
This is his breath.
Where is his love?
Whose tender care gazes on his face now?
